Macro Video Using the CVS Camcorder

Prompted by this post at camerahackers.com, I set out to make my camcorder able to take macro video. This was an extremely easy mod and probably doesn't even warrant its own page. Here it is anyway.

WARNING: disposable cameras can have a high voltage charge built up for the flash.  If you attempt this, be very careful.  I am not responsible for any damage, injury, loss of limbs, loss of life, or anything else that could possibly happen as a result of trying anything on this page.

I picked up a disposable (film) camera to get the lens I needed. The viewfinder was made up of a front and back lens, both of which made decent macro lenses. I broke it open and took the one that would be closest to your eye if you were to actually use the camera to take pictures. Rubber bands were used to hold it to the camcorder.

Another way to get macro is to unscrew the lens until it is barely attached, but you'll have to open up your camcorder.  If you want to do it this way, follow the instructions on my IR page except don't actually remove the lens.

You'd use a real camera lens if you really wanted to do macro right. If you just want a few close-up shots of random junk, this is probably the easiest and cheapest way to go.

UPDATE:  I unscrewwed my lens until it was almost falling out, then I added that same half of the viewfinder that I used before and put the disposable film camera's own lens in front of that.  This gives me much closer shots than before.  I added some of the videos i've taken to the page linked below, but here's a preview showing how close the new setup gets...

I've put up some videos I've taken with this setup here
